Day 1
An early departure from Pretoria travels via Roodepoort.At Kroonstad we pause a while for breakfast and then proceed via Bloemfontein, Reddersburg, Smithfieldand Rouxville.We cross the Orange Riverand enter the Eastern Cape.The route from here is unbelievably beautiful and travels all along the southern border of Drakensberg. We pass Lady Grey, the Kraai river pass and Barkly-East. The route continuous to amaze us, especially the winding Elliot pass with its strange rock formations and the “Tortoise” and the “Guards of Elliot”, are rather special.At Elliot, we call it a day and we spend our first night at Mountain Shadows.
Day 2
After a delicious breakfast, we depart. The beautiful route proceeds via Maclear and Matatielle. We proceed northward and just after Underberg we reach our destination for the next 2 nights the breathtaking Sani Pass Hotel.
Day 3
Today is a day filled with excitement and adventure!!After breakfast, we depart for Himeville and board 4 X 4 vehicles. We depart on a breath-taking route through the World Heritage area– the Natal Drakensberg Park and then climb the Sani Pass to reach the Roof of Africa at an elevation of approximately 3 000mto the highest pub in Africa A Day never to be forgotten!!!
Day 4
After a delicious breakfast, we depart in the direction of the Central Drakensberg. The route takes us via Howick, Mooi River and Estcourt to Monk’s Cowl Resort,where we will be staying over for the next 2 nights
Day 5
A day to marvel the beauty and majesty of the longest mountain range in South Africa. During the morning, and weather permitting, a fascinating Raptor Show is in the offering at Falcon Ridge. If not, we will take a short drive in the area to some of the local industries and shops and then return to the hotel. During the afternoon we will attend a concert by the angel voices of the Drakensberg Boys Choir.
Day 6
We must leave this wonder world behind us. After breakfast, we hit the road in a northerly direction to Bergville. We visit the interesting and magnificent engineering achievement – that of the Drakensberg underground pump station, where water is pumped across the escarpment into the Sterkfontein Dam and electricity is generated. Following this visit, we depart via the Olivier’s Hoek Pass and the Sterkfontein Dam to the wonder world of the brightly coloured sandstone formations of the Golden Gate National Highlands Parkand our home for tonight
Day 7
Our time is up and all too soon we must hit the road back home. Our route runs via Bethlehem, Frankfort and Villiersto Roodepoortand Pretoria. Another wonderful experience becomes an ever-lasting memory.
